Emergence of Brazil

September 6, 2010 by Sal

There is no question that Brazil is the most successful national football team in the history of the World Cup and that it produces the best breed of footballer and exports them to leagues in need. Over the past 30 years, Brazil transformed itself from an importing country to one of the world’s largest exporter, that is, not of football players alone, but products such as aircraft, electrical equipment, automobiles, ethanol, textiles, footwear, oil, iron ore, steel, coffee, orange juice, soybeans and corned beef.

Brazil has truly emerged, to becoming the world’s eighth largest economy by nominal GDP as it liberated itself from government control and went through economic reform that gave it international recognition. Talking about diversification, today, Brazil is the world’s biggest exporter of five internationally traded crops, and number two in soyabeans and maize.

Still, I like the idea of going short Brazilian sovereign bonds at current levels. Very short.
