Apple: The Distant Pipe Dream

July 19, 2010 by Sal

We are officially in the second half of July and yet the white iPhone 4 seems much like a lost cause. Apple recently announced that it has sold more than three million units of its iPhone 4 in its first twenty-two days despite the antenna story being hyped by the media for nearly the entire stretch as well. Looking more into the number, Apple announced sales of 1.7 million in the first three days, meaning that Apple has only sold 1.3 million iPhones in the following 19 days of sales. Currently the lead time in getting an iPhone 4 through the Apple store online is a three week delay. Aside from the antenna problem, if anything, perhaps Apple should be criticized from continually underestimating demand. There is no doubt that Apple investors are both disappointed and frustrated by Steve’s approach of fixing the antenna problem and long lead time. Is the free bumper really free? Or are we all osmotic apple users patching up a new product just because Steve Jobs told us so.

The chart below shows the markets reaction to all iPhone release announcements.

  1. FAISAL says:

    osmotic… hmmmm ;p

    a.
the tendency of a fluid, usually water, to pass through a semipermeable membrane into a solution where the solvent concentration is higher, thus equalizing the concentrations of materials on either side of the membrane.
    b.
the diffusion of fluids through membranes or porous partitions.

You were close Faisal. Its an adjective describing an apparently effortless absorption of ideas, feelings, attitudes, etc., as if by biological osmosis ;p
